Railroad Heritage 22

Railroad Heritage no. 22 showcases the winners of the annual Creative Photography Award and begins a series, “Faces of Railroading,” about Jack Delano and his portraits of people and railroads in preparation for an exhibition in Chicago. Other highlights of the journal include stories about the Center’s 2009 activities, the 2010 “Conversations about Photography” conference, and profiles of photographer Frank Barry and the designer of the Southern Pacific’s 1937 Daylight passenger train. Jim Shaughnessy of Troy, New York, captured the spirit of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Elmira, New York, branch in 1957. The challenge for the Center is to interpret these and other images in innovative ways, to explain the impact of railroading and photography for 21st century audiences.
Gifts of appreciated securities offer donors an opportunity to make a substantial gift to the Center and avoid capital gains taxes. The donor also may use the gift as a charitable tax donation.
The process for transferring appreciated stock to the Center is quite simple. The first step is to notify the the Center office of the intent to make the gift along with the intended purpose of the gift. Donations may be restricted to a particular program or support general operations. Upon notification of an impending securities gift, the Center will contact the donor with details for submitting the transfer either in person, through the mail, or electronically.
Because the Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, a bequest allows a donor to pass any amount to the Center free of estate taxes. The donor is able to specify a dollar amount or percentage of the estate to be donated with or without restrictions.
A bequest is revocable and able to be modified through a codicil, thus providing the donor flexibility and privacy. The following words are needed:
"I give and bequeath to the Center for Railroad Photograhy & Art, P.O. Box 259330, Madison, Wisconsin 53725-9330, the sum of _______ dollars (or ___% of my estate), to be used at the discretion of said organization (or for a specific program or project)."
