Runner Up: Kevin Scanlon, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

The hand of man looms large as the steel mill's blast furnace and supporting structures, silhouetted against a sun filtered by a thick sky make the working switch engine seem miniscule by comparison. Such a basic steel producer may require thousands of employees to maintain the operation and trainloads of inbound raw materials to feed the furnaces. Outbound carloads of ingots, steel coils or plates generate the revenue to pay the bills.   Steel mills and railroads are interconnected industries, for no railroad can exist without steel and no steel mill can exist without rail service. The photo says it all.
