Judges' comment:
The hazy, layered mountains of California’s Donner Pass tower above and dwarf the railroad. By purposely making the railroad a minor element of this composition, the photographer captured its relationship with the Sierra Nevada, whose hazy forms loom enormously above the scene. The low, glinting sunlight draws just enough attention to Amtrak’s California Zephyr.
