2010 Awards Program Breaks Record

Visitors at the California State Railroad Museum view photos from the Center's 2008 contest.

Judging Continues, Check Back Soon for Winners

Interest in the Center's Creative Photography Awards Program reached a new high this year, with nearly 200 photographers submitting some 700 photographs for consideration. The theme of “Beyond the Locomotive” proved popular and led to perhaps the most diverse range of photographs ever entered.

Judging will be conducted by Kimberly Parker, Director of the O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, Virginia. Parker was raised in Charlottesville, Virginia, received a Bachelor’s degree in Photography from Virginia Intermont College and a Master’s of Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She joined the O. Winston Link Museum after four and a half years as Curator of Collections for the Town of Wytheville (Virginia). In 2006 her title was changed to Director to more accurately reflect her role with the museum. Parker has worked on several amateur and semi-professional rail photo shoots and has overseen the development of temporary photo exhibitions on all topics, with a heavy emphasis on railroad photography.

Parker will have the option of selecting winners for a body of work or a single best image. All judging will be blind. Winners will be announced here soon, although the high volume of entries has extended the judging beyond the original announcement date of February 15. The winning photos will be displayed and discussed at the 2010 “Conversations about Photography” conference.

Awards

The Center and co-sponsor Canon will award prizes totaling $2,000. The winning photos will form an exhibition at the California State Railroad Museum, and Railfan & Railroad magazine will publish a selection of the top photos in its “Photo Line” feature. The Center will include a contest announcement in its journal, Railroad Heritage, and it may add the photographers&rsquo work to its traveling exhibition, and the railroadheritage.org Web portal.
