A pastoral scene at dawn near the Maryland-West Virginia border is captured with a graduated neutral density filter, preserving the delicate light and providing a beautiful tonal range of colors and textures. With the train barely visible at lower left, the composition pushes the envelope of the railroad landscape photograph, while also bringing to mind many landscape paintings of the mid-19th century that included very small trains in tranquil settings.
